Well, here we are in the middle of August and the grain harvest is in full swing. All the fields surrounding us are being Combined and they have just started on the field at the back. It’s a race to get it all done in time before the forecasted rain. Its always an exciting sight to see the huge leviathan working in a cloud of dust. It’s extremely hard work for the farmers and not without problems and danger – only this week 60 tonnes of straw very near us in Kenninghall were lost in a blaze.
The Cornhall in Diss is being refurbished and updated – this will be an even greater asset for the town. We have seen some great acts there like Marcus Brigstoke, Jeremy Hardy and Mark Steele in recent years. For now the weekly film screenings, comedy club and even blood donating have moved to the Rugby Club. See www.disscornhall.co.uk for the diary of events.
Also take a look on www.dissmercury.co.uk for a great video of the flash mob in Morrisons supermarket (search Morrisons flash mob) – Michael Dann and Discord singers – just great, it reminds you of what a jolly lot the people of Diss are!
The Diss Express www.dissexpress.co.uk has all the local news too, but I was disappointed to see that I had missed the open day at Woodbine Farm Weybread with their Alpacas. Hmm…. I wonder if we have enough space for an Alpaca? Probably not, but we do have room for two more chickens (see gallery picture). We visited Stephen at The Hen Garden Company www.hen-house.co.uk over at Thorndon, near Eye, and brought home two miniature silver laced Wyandottes (The Dotty twins) and very gorgeous they are too.
I notice that Redgrave and Lopham Fen has lots of family activities in the summer holidays like the Wild Fun and Games on the 18th August and Pictorial Orienteering family afternoon the following day. Hopefully the weather will be good for the next month or so and our lovely area can be explored by locals and visitors alike. www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/reserves/redgrave-lopham-fen
